Writing Inspirations

My inspirations for writing my latest novel, Web Of Lies involves a range of experiences that lead from one novel to the next in my romantic suspense series (Friends In Crisis Series).

Here are a few thought-provoking questions to give you an idea of the story’s plotline:

What would you do if your father was arrested for a crime?

What if you fall in love with a detective but don’t trust in relationships?

What if you’re confronted with a stalker who won’t let you go?

What if you escape your kidnapper, only to realise you need to turn back to save a teenage girl?

My Process

I have a range of inspirations when I begin to plot my novel.

Firstly, I focus on my surroundings, read articles of interest, interact with people, watch TV programs, and do my research about interesting themes or topics. I can get inspired by anything that is around me or while doing my meditation, then I ask myself ‘What if’ questions that lead to an array of possibilities for plotlines.

My inspiration for Web Of Lies included an Internet article I’d read. For example, as I have an interest in the criminal mind and the psychology of killers, I came across an article about Gerard Gallego who had killed ten people between 1978 and 1980. Looking through his profile, I wrote and embellished his story by introducing my villain.

My other inspiration originated from my past counselling experience when working with clients who presented with romantic challenges, abuse or trauma. I reaped the rewards whenever I was able to help them move past a trigger and to keep clients grounded. I have that desire to help people.

In my novels, I aim to write about characters presenting with challenges and overcoming adversity. I strive to help others to overcome these challenges so they can move towards posttraumatic growth.

My other inspiration involves my interest in serial profiling and the need to get justice and resolution for victims.

Another inspiration consists of my passion to read and write books in this kind of genre, namely romantic suspense/thrillers. I am also passionate about watching TV shows or movies involving suspense, thriller, and romantic action. I have enjoyed watching TV shows including Mind Hunter, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, The Stalker, Profiler, You, Castle, and Arrow, which have all featured crime, suspense, and love.
